JMS255: How to Make an Extra $1000 Per Month

How would an extra $1,000/month impact your life? It’s easy to get caught up in the big numbers online marketers throw around, but if you really think about it… even just an extra $1,000/month could be the difference between living paycheck to paycheck or having some room to breath.

Not only that, but often once you figure out how to make an extra $1,000/month, you can see how to easily turn that into an extra $2,000 or $3,000 a month or more. But, just like learning how to code, you need a plan for getting there. This episode I show you how to break this down, “do the math” and develop a gameplan for getting to $1,000 and then beyond.

Hello John,

I will give you my honest review of this podcast. 80% of this is fluff, and basically teaching people how to count to 1000, breaking down to show how 1K is not a big deal. Nobody will benefit much from this. Imagine if you were talking about sources where clients are desperate for certain kind of code, and what freelancers need to know, before being able to do it. If you are talking about freelance places like Upwork, very often programmers will bid much, much lower than $25.
Just trying to inspire you to write something that people can actually use.

“Nobody will benefit much from this.” I’ll agree to disagree here. I benefited quite a bit from it when I really thought about it and focused on it. It’s interesting when I talk about this stuff, because people will say things like “it’s simple math”… but, when you ask most people “What are your numbers?”… they can’t tell you. In any case, people these days tend to call anything that’s not 100% “step 1 do this, step 2 do that” advice… “fluff”. But, I’ve maintained and will maintain that concepts, ways of thinking, ideas, emotions… all these things are and will continue to be far more important than any steps I could lay out for you. Not knowing what steps to take isn’t what stops people, most of the time. It’s knowing them and being scared to take them that does.

Hey John,

Thank you for your reply to this guy and well said. Personally, I find this cast enlightening…. One and a half hours a day with this method (btw, let it be known, John does point out a method to use when talking about what he looks for on Upwork) can net me an extra $1,000 a month? I’m essentially learning to code full time and some days spend 12 to 15 hours at the computer (the struggle is real, but so is the drive).

There are a couple issues I have with Srdjan’s comment. Now, I know everyone wants the exact route to take to make $1,000+ per month. I know I do! Who wouldn’t? And that’s exactly the idea. On John’s YouTube channel, he has 52,283 followers. If John gives out the exact steps, then those 52k people are going to follow them and then it’s not really going to make us any money anymore.

Secondly, I agree with what he says about people charging considerably less than $25/hr on Upwork, but maybe he’s just not a long time listener. What I’ve learned from your podcast and YT’s are when you’re starting out, you may have to charge less to get a following/good rating on Upwork, but as you do, you can/should increase your price (This cast even talks about raising your prices)! This is because while charging less may attract more business in the short run, it essentially makes you a commodity (easily replaceable), so it may make people less likely to choose you in the long run anyway. It may be a little more difficult to find work on Upwork at a higher price, but if your skills are there, then you’ll do it. I’m not there, yet, but I will be.

Anyway, this is a little long for a reply, but I want people to see the value in this kind of advice. Most of us do appreciate the time you spend trying to help us. 🙂

My goal is to make 28k this year on the side Or $2,333.33 per month or 1 site per month. Working backwards like this is breaking down the problem/goal into smaller and smaller chunks. It feels less daunting and you have less ‘analysis by paralysis’ going on.

Agreed. That and you have a daily/monthly goal to focus on to know if you’re on track. That’s what really helped me. Took it from being a vague number “in the air” to something concrete I had to achieve and could test myself against each day. That’s the real value, imo.

Really enjoyed this John. What you shared is basically what everyone else says. Set a goal and plan out how to get there. But sometimes, people need to hear an example of how someone else obtained there goal, in this case an extra $1000 a month, so realize that they can do it themselves. Good Stuff! and Happy New Year. By the way really enjoyed your PHP course on Udemy. I tried a couple of other courses on there, like that Edwin guy’s, and returned all of them. Sticking to yours.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the course! And yeah, it’s pretty standard advice, but I find a lot of people just don’t do it. When you really break it down and think about it… it seems a lot more attainable in your mind that you might have thought. You see that with $1,000. But, you really see it when you start thinking about making $100,000 in a year. I doubt most developers would know, without doing the math, that only takes 4 clients at 50/hour to do.
